Utah Outdoors Radio - On the Trail with Trail Master Outdoors - Tundra Swans

I went out Friday evening with Phil Douglas, the Northern Region Wildlife Outreach Coordinator, to the Harold Crane WMA area in Northern Utah and recorded a great segment for this weeks show on the migration of the Tundra Swans and what an experience we had. The song of the Tundra Swans is one if you have never heard, you need to get out now and see these magnificent birds. With an estimated almost 60,000 birds coming back to Utah due to the habit restoration efforts of many associations, the Utah Division of Wildlife and many hours of hard work after the devastation of their habitat during the floods during the 1980's of the Great Salt Lake. Those floods literally wiped out much of the habitat in the Great Salt Lake Eco-System, which had taken a serious affect of the numbers of swans we have had coming into Utah for many years, but due to the above mention efforts, the swans are back and almost even better then they have ever been. I invite you to join us and listen in on this great interview and get out to the many different locations along the Great Salt Lake marshes to enjoy these fantastic creatures.
Tune in now! The Swan Songs of the Tundra Swans!

Yellowstone in the Fall
What a wonderful piece of this country to enjoy this time of the year! Yellowstone National Park is no farther than driving to Lake Powell in Utah, but what a change in scenery and a wonderful place to visit anytime of the year, but fall is one of the best times to miss the crowds, see the animals and just escape from everyday life we have just over 5 hours drive from Salt Lake City.
We are staying at the Three Bear Lodge in West Yellowstone thanks to Clyde Seely, owner of Three Bear Lodge and pioneer of setting up the industry of snowmobiling here in West Yellowstone. Clyde is much of the reason I feel West Yellowstone is and stays a full service year round destination for all that wish to enjoy the awesome beauty the Park has to offer.
The Three Bear Lodge is one of several of Clyde Seely's ventures here in West Yellowstone. Clyde and his wife Linda started managing the Lodge and Restaurant in 1964 and have made many renovations since it's humble beginning back in the 1930's when it was just a small gas station with 12 small cabins that rented for $4.00 per night. It is a great place that is centrally located and within walking distance of just about every attraction West Yellowstone has to offer.
Yellowstone is full of discoveries. Archaeologists have found evidence of human use of the area as far back as 11,000 years ago. We know that groups of natives have lived in, hunted, fished, gathered plants, collected minerals and held ceremonies for thousands of years.
With each season, the face of Yellowstone National Park changes. Each season brings many different opportunities to recreate within the background of spectacular nature and all it has to offer. From the multitude of animals that call this place home to the many geological wonders around every bend, if you have only been to Yellowstone once season, you have many adventures awaiting you.
Fall brings out many of the not so easily or often seen animals such as the many elk that call the Park home. The Elk are in full rut, the deer have lost their velvet and are looking to fatten up for the long winter so are often out and visible. And temperatures are just right if you are dressed right.
Today, we spent the day making the smaller of the loop drives around the Park. Our morning started out within a few minutes of entering the gates of West Yellowstone with a herd of elk just off to the side of the road. What an incredible experience is was to be so close to these animals that show no fear of man and allow you plenty of time to grab your camera and get some good pictures.
If you're heading up to Yellowstone, make sure to stop at See Yellowstone's web site for more information!
